PEEK High-performance Engineering Plastics

PEEK High-performance Engineering Plastics
Product Introduction:
Within the spectrum of specialty engineering plastics, polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has long been regarded as the benchmark against which the performance of other high-temperature polymers is measured. As a semi-crystalline polyaryletherketone (PAEK), PEEK has established an irreplaceable position in high-end manufacturing sectors—such as aerospace, semiconductors, medical technology, and energy—since its commercialization, thanks to its exceptional heat resistance, chemical inertness, and mechanical strength.

Our company specializes in supplying high-quality PEEK resins and powders, dedicated to providing global customers with material solutions that offer stable performance and high batch-to-batch consistency. The core value of PEEK lies in its ability to maintain stable, critical performance characteristics under demanding operating conditions, rather than merely excelling in a single metric.

Key Performance Characteristics of PEEK High-Performance Engineering Plastics:

Exceptional Heat Resistance: PEEK has a glass transition temperature (Tg) of approximately 143°C and a melting point (Tm) of 343°C. In its unfilled state, the continuous service temperature reaches 250°C; when reinforced with glass or carbon fibers, this can be raised to over 300°C. Even in a 200°C steam environment, it retains more than 50% of its initial mechanical properties.

Outstanding Mechanical Strength: PEEK typically exhibits a tensile strength of 90–110 MPa and a tensile modulus of approximately 3.6–4.1 GPa. Its fatigue and creep resistance are particularly outstanding-surpassing that of most thermoplastics-making it ideal for structural components subjected to cyclic loading.

Broad Chemical Resistance: With the exception of strongly oxidizing media such as concentrated sulfuric acid and nitric acid, PEEK demonstrates excellent resistance to hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, oils, and various acids and bases. It has extremely low water absorption (approximately 0.1%) and maintains excellent dimensional stability in humid or high-temperature aqueous environments.

Excellent Flame Retardancy and Low Smoke Characteristics: PEEK is inherently flame-retardant, with a Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) of approximately 35, achieving a UL94 V-0 rating without the need for added flame retardants. It produces minimal smoke and non-toxic gases during combustion, meeting stringent fire safety standards for rail transit and aviation interiors.

Biocompatibility and Purity: PEEK high-performance engineering plastics offer excellent biocompatibility; they are FDA and USP Class VI certified and widely used in implantable medical devices such as spinal fusion cages and joint replacements. Additionally, their low ion-leaching characteristics make them the material of choice for components in semiconductor manufacturing equipment, such as wafer carriers and vacuum suction cups.

Chemical and hydrolysis resistance are equally outstanding. PEEK withstands the vast majority of organic acids, weak bases, mineral oils, hydraulic fluids, and hydrocarbon solvents. It exhibits exceptional hydrolysis resistance in high-temperature steam environments, showing minimal loss of strength even after prolonged exposure to heat and humidity. It is susceptible to corrosion only by strong oxidizing agents like concentrated nitric acid-a factor to consider during material selection. Furthermore, it possesses inherent self-lubricating properties, a low coefficient of friction, and low wear rates, making it ideal for components subject to continuous sliding friction, such as bearings, sliding sleeves, and seal rings.

We offer a variety of modified grades: unfilled PEEK provides balanced toughness; carbon fiber-filled PEEK offers enhanced rigidity and wear resistance; and glass fiber-modified versions deliver superior dimensional stability. However, PEEK does have processing challenges; its rapid crystallization rate makes parts prone to warping and interlayer cracking during SLS (Selective Laser Sintering). The processing window is significantly narrower compared to amorphous PEKK, requiring precise equipment parameter tuning; we recommend conducting sample testing and validation for new projects.
