PEKK Resin

PEKK Resin
Product Introduction:
Engineers in sectors such as aerospace, medical implants, oil and gas equipment, semiconductors, and additive manufacturing frequently encounter challenges involving extreme operating conditions. Conventional engineering plastics often fall short: some lack sufficient heat resistance, deforming under sustained high temperatures, while others possess poor chemical resistance, failing rapidly upon contact with oils, acids, or alkalis. Furthermore, many materials are prone to warping and poor interlayer adhesion during 3D printing or precision injection molding, making it difficult to produce complex parts with dimensional stability. PEKK (polyetherketoneketone)—a semi-crystalline, high-performance thermoplastic belonging to the PAEK (polyaryletherketone) family—has emerged as a popular choice in high-end international manufacturing projects for replacing metal and upgrading from PEEK solutions, thanks to its tunable crystallization characteristics.

The defining feature of PEKK resin is the ability to directly alter crystallization rates, melting points, and processing windows by adjusting monomer ratios; this represents the fundamental difference between PEKK and PEEK. Commercially available grades generally fall into three categories: fast-crystallizing, medium-crystallizing, and slow-crystallizing (pseudo-amorphous). Fast-crystallizing grades are ideal for high-volume injection molding. Slow-crystallizing grades, which generate lower crystallization stress, offer distinct advantages in SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) powder bed fusion and FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printing; printed parts are less prone to warping or deformation and exhibit superior interlayer adhesion, making them well-suited for precision components featuring complex internal channels and thin-walled structures. The material is available in various forms-including virgin pellets, glass- or carbon-fiber reinforced pellets, 3D printing powders, and filaments-supporting a wide range of processing methods such as injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, powder coating, and additive manufacturing. The specific physicochemical properties of PEKK resin are as follows:

Thermal properties: Melting point >300°C (some data indicate up to 390°C; adjustable between 280–390°C by varying monomer molar ratios); softening point 168°C; glass transition temperature (Tg) approx. 156–165°C; heat deflection temperature (HDT) of 150–175°C for neat resin and approx. 300°C for reinforced resin; continuous service temperature of 250–260°C, with short-term exposure tolerance up to 300°C; initial thermal decomposition temperature >500°C; low-temperature resistance down to -200°C.

Mechanical properties: Tensile strength 110–148 MPa; flexural modulus 3.8–4.5 GPa; characterized by high stiffness, high toughness, impact resistance, wear resistance, and fatigue resistance; low coefficient of friction and self-lubricating properties; excellent creep resistance.

Chemical and electrical properties: Excellent chemical corrosion resistance, withstanding almost all organic and inorganic chemicals (except highly corrosive agents such as fuming sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and dichloromethane); high dielectric strength and good insulation performance; low dielectric constant (approx. 2.2); excellent barrier properties (e.g., against CO2 and H2S).

Other characteristics: Inherently flame-retardant with low smoke and low toxicity (UL94 V-0 rating); excellent radiation resistance; good biocompatibility and X-ray transparency; density approx. 1.3 g/cm³; low moisture absorption.

PEKK 05

Processing properties: Suitable for various processes including injection molding, extrusion, 3D printing (SLS), powder coating, and unidirectional prepreg tape production; features a wide processing window.

Many overseas clients seek us out for custom modification because standard grades do not always align with their specific equipment and product requirements. We offer OEM formulation adjustments-such as modifying carbon fiber or glass fiber loading ratios and incorporating wear-resistant fillers or lubricating additives-to customize PEKK resin in terms of viscosity and color based on the client's actual operating conditions. For medical implants, we utilize high-purity raw materials to minimize metal ion leaching; for oil and gas seals, we prioritize optimizing wear resistance and creep resistance; and for 3D printing manufacturers, we can customize powder particle size distribution and flowability specifications. Customers can provide part drawings, molding equipment parameters, and operating conditions, allowing our laboratory to conduct small-scale sample testing to verify processing characteristics and final product quality before proceeding to mass production, thereby avoiding the risks associated with immediate large-scale manufacturing.
