Scaffold Plank

Scaffold Plank
Product Introduction:
Those involved in the procurement of scaffolding components are well aware that scaffold planks—the platforms that directly support personnel, tools, and materials during high-altitude work—are critical to safety within any scaffolding system. While many overseas construction sites traditionally relied on wooden planks, there is a growing shift toward steel scaffold planks to meet fire safety requirements and the need for repeated, long-term use; the differences in cost and service life between the two are substantial.

There are four main types of scaffold planks on the market, each suited to different applications. Stamped steel planks-commonly referred to simply as "steel planks"-are the most frequently exported variety. They are typically manufactured from Q235 hot-rolled steel strips and finished with either hot-dip or pre-galvanized coatings. The surface features stamped anti-slip holes and raised ribs, with reinforced edges for added strength. Many designs include integrated hooks at both ends, allowing them to be attached directly to the transoms of modular scaffolding systems (such as ringlock, cuplock, or wedge-lock types) without the need for additional lashing. These steel planks are resistant to cracking, moisture, and fire, and can be reused dozens of times. They are widely used in infrastructure projects, shipyards, and refinery maintenance across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Wooden planks, often made from pine or fir, offer a softer footing and lower initial cost; however, they are vulnerable to fire and moisture-induced decay, leading to high wear and tear-a reason why many overseas sites now restrict their use. Bamboo planks remain in limited demand in parts of Southeast Asia, though export volumes from China are low. Aluminum alloy planks are lightweight and corrosion-resistant, making them ideal for offshore platforms and marine maintenance, though their higher unit cost generally limits them to high-end projects.

The structural details of steel planks directly impact on-site safety. Thicker steel gauges and reinforced folded edges help minimize deflection under load. The stamped anti-slip perforations not only increase friction but also allow water, sand, and debris to pass through, preventing the surface from becoming slippery. Hooks come in various configurations-single, double, or self-locking. Self-locking hooks are particularly secure, as they are less likely to disengage under high winds or vibrations; consequently, they are frequently specified for projects in Europe and the Americas. In terms of specifications, the length can be customized to match the scaffolding span-typically ranging from 0.5m to 4m-with standard widths of 240mm, 250mm, or 300mm, and thickness adjusted according to specific requirements.

When selecting the right type, it is essential to ensure compatibility with the scaffolding system. For ring-lock or cup-lock systems, it is best to use standardized steel planks equipped with integrated hooks. For traditional coupler-based scaffolding, flat planks without hooks can be used and laid directly onto the structure. Furthermore, for projects in salt-spray environments-such as those near the coast or in shipyards-hot-dip galvanizing is the preferred choice, as it offers significantly better corrosion resistance than standard spray-painting or pre-galvanized finishes.

Anti-corrosion surface treatment is critical, especially for overseas projects. Hot-dip galvanizing is currently the most reliable solution; the zinc coating should generally be at least 65μm thick, with 80μm to 100μm recommended for coastal areas or chemical plant sites. Some clients opt for electro-galvanizing or spray-painting to cut costs; while these may appear similar initially, they often begin to rust within months of outdoor use. Once rust reaches the connection points between the hooks and the plank surface, the equipment becomes hazardous. We conduct random salt-spray tests on our galvanized products to ensure they meet the required anti-corrosion standards.

Steel scaffolding planks are the most widely used option for overseas projects. We typically supply planks with widths ranging from 210mm to 500mm, lengths from 1m to 4m, and thicknesses of 2mm to 3mm, manufactured from Q235 or Q355 steel and finished with hot-dip galvanizing. Steel planks are far more durable than timber alternatives-they are rot-proof, pest-resistant, non-combustible, and offer consistent load-bearing capacity. However, one detail often overlooked is the anti-slip design of the surface. A smooth steel surface, when covered in mud, water, frost, or snow, becomes as slippery as ice. We typically incorporate perforations or embossed patterns on the surface to provide traction; perforations also reduce the plank's self-weight and facilitate the drainage of water and mud. The size and spacing of these perforations are carefully calibrated-if they are too large, shoe soles may get caught, while if they are too small, drainage becomes ineffective. We typically offer designs featuring elongated or plum-blossom-shaped (flower-pattern) perforations, which provide both slip resistance and effective drainage.
