There are three main categories of couplers, which also represent the types most frequently requested in international trade inquiries. Right-angle couplers-often referred to as "cross couplers"-account for the highest volume of shipments; they are used to secure vertical standards and horizontal ledgers at a 90-degree angle, forming the primary framework of the scaffolding. Swivel couplers allow for 360-degree rotation and are used for cross-bracing, diagonal supports, or specialized, non-standard structures where pipes do not intersect at a right angle. Butt couplers-sometimes called "straight" or "in-line" couplers-are used to join two pipes end-to-end, extending the length of a standard or ledger. There are also more specialized types, such as single couplers, "pig-ear" (swivel-style) couplers, and beam clamps, which are typically custom-ordered for specific overseas markets.

In terms of manufacturing, couplers are generally classified as forged, pressed (stamped), or cast. Forged couplers offer high strength and a dense internal structure, making them suitable for applications with demanding load-bearing requirements. Pressed couplers are more cost-effective, making them ideal for large-scale projects. Cast couplers are still used in some markets, though buyers should carefully evaluate their fracture resistance and compliance with relevant technical standards. In terms of material, Q235 carbon steel is the most common choice, though other steel grades can be selected based on specific client standards. Surface treatment options typically include electro-galvanizing, hot-dip galvanizing, or a plain (untreated) finish; hot-dip galvanizing offers superior durability in humid, salt-spray, or long-term, high-turnover environments.

When selecting couplers for overseas projects, ensuring compliance with the correct standards is crucial. Different markets adhere to various standards-such as EN 74, BS 1139, JIS, or AS/NZS 1576-and clients generally specify dimensions, weight, slip-load capacity, and inspection protocols in accordance with local regulations or project requirements. Therefore, before providing a quote, it is best to clarify the applicable standards, tube diameter specifications, surface treatment, target unit weight, and packaging requirements to prevent compatibility issues upon arrival.
