Material selection is paramount for high-pressure flanges. Material Test Reports (MTR): Reports compliant with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 must accompany the shipment, covering melt analysis, mechanical properties, heat treatment status, and grain size. For critical service conditions, third-party re-verification (e.g., by SGS or TÜV) is recommended.
Dimensional and Geometric Tolerances: Calipers, micrometers, and height gauges are used to spot-check flange thickness, neck dimensions, sealing surface roughness (special gauges are required for RTJ grooves), and bolt hole positional accuracy. Dimensional tolerances for high-pressure flanges are significantly tighter than those for medium- or low-pressure flanges.
Hardness Testing: Leeb hardness testing is conducted in accordance with ASTM A956 to verify heat treatment effectiveness, ensuring the material is neither too hard (risk of brittle fracture) nor too soft (insufficient pressure-bearing capacity).
Hydrostatic Testing: While flanges are typically tested as part of the piping system, as standalone components, they can be subjected to a shell hydrostatic test at 1.5 times the design pressure. The test pressure must be maintained for at least 30 minutes with no leakage or visible deformation.
NDT Reports: UT and MT reports must be submitted as part of the factory documentation and signed by qualified NDT personnel.
