Straight Seam Pipe

Straight Seam Pipe
Product Introduction:
Straight seam welded steel pipe is a general term for a type of welded pipe where the weld seam is distributed along the axial direction of the pipe. It has a wide range of applications in global infrastructure, industrial equipment, and fluid transportation. Many overseas purchasers often confuse high-frequency resistance welded (HFW) and double-sided submerged arc welded (LSAW) pipes. Both belong to straight seam welded steel pipes, but their production processes and applicable working conditions differ significantly. Incorrect selection can easily create hidden dangers for the project.

As long as the weld seam runs along the longitudinal direction of the pipe, it can be classified as a straight seam welded steel pipe. The mainstream types on the market are divided into two main branches. One type is high-frequency resistance welded straight seam pipe, which uses hot-rolled steel strip as raw material. After continuous rolling, the edges of the steel strip are heated by high-frequency current, and the weld is completed by extrusion and fusion. It has high production efficiency and good dimensional accuracy, and is more suitable for small to medium diameters and medium wall thicknesses. The other type is double-sided submerged arc welded straight seam pipe, which uses a whole steel plate pressed into a pipe blank by JCOE, and then performs double-sided submerged arc welding. It is mainly used for large diameters, thick walls, and high steel grades, targeting high-pressure and high-safety engineering projects. Compared to spiral seam steel pipes, straight seam welded pipes have only one weld seam, resulting in a shorter total weld seam length and inherent advantages in fatigue resistance and alternating pressure resistance.

In the production process, the quality inspection standards for the two types of straight seam welded pipes also have different focuses. High-frequency straight seam welded pipes emphasize the removal of weld burrs, roundness, and straightness, and finished products require eddy current testing and hydrostatic testing. Double-sided submerged arc straight seam pipes undergo ultrasonic testing of the entire weld seam, and some orders also include radiographic testing. Diameter expansion and straightening are essential processes to eliminate internal stress in the pipe. For export orders, we can provide complete material certificates and support on-site testing by third-party institutions to meet the acceptance requirements of projects in different countries.

The specifications cover a wide range. High-frequency straight seam welded pipes are mostly concentrated in small and medium diameters with relatively thinner walls; double-sided submerged arc straight seam pipes can be made with very large outer diameters and thick walls, and some special thickened specifications are also available for customization. Standard factory lengths are 8-12 meters, but custom lengths are also available upon request. Pipe ends can be beveled or flat-end, adaptable to various construction methods such as on-site flange connections and welding, reducing on-site pipe handling workload for overseas projects.

Regarding material selection, Q235B and Q355B (formerly Q345B) are the most commonly used carbon structural steel grades in the domestic supply chain, corresponding to internationally recognized grades such as ASTM A500 Gr.B or S355JR. Purchasers must pay special attention to the impact energy index of the material, especially for projects constructed in low-temperature environments. The Charpy V-notch impact test temperature and minimum impact energy requirements must be clearly specified in the contract to avoid potential engineering problems due to material cold brittleness. Furthermore, with the formal implementation of the GB/T 3091-2025 standard, procurement documents should be updated with the standard version number in a timely manner to ensure compliance and timeliness of technical requirements.

From a supply chain management perspective, the procurement cycle of straight seam welded pipes is significantly affected by the process type. Standard-sized ERW steel pipes, if in stock, can typically be delivered within 7 to 10 days; while LSAW steel pipes, due to their involvement in steel plate rolling, multi-pass forming, and complex testing processes, usually require 30 to 45 days for production. For orders involving special materials, thicker walls, or customized corrosion protection requirements, it is recommended to allow for a longer lead time to cope with fluctuations in raw material prices and uncertainties in shipping schedules.

In summary, selecting straight seam welded steel pipes is not simply a matter of matching specifications, but a comprehensive decision involving process suitability, standard compliance, material reliability, and supply chain stability. As a supplier, we recommend that purchasers provide as much detail as possible about the application scenario during the inquiry stage, including key information such as design pressure, media characteristics, ambient temperature, and laying method. Based on these parameters, we can provide more accurate material recommendations and process solutions to help you optimize procurement costs while ensuring project quality.
