Ductile iron castings are utilized across virtually all major industrial sectors that demand high strength, ductility, toughness, and wear resistance, as well as resistance to severe thermal and mechanical shock, high or low temperatures, and corrosion, alongside dimensional stability. To accommodate these varying service conditions, ductile iron is available in numerous grades, offering a wide spectrum of mechanical and physical properties.
Most ductile iron castings-such as those specified by the ISO 1083 standard-are produced in an unalloyed state. This range encompasses high-strength grades with tensile strengths exceeding 800 N/mm² and elongations of 2%. At the other end of the spectrum are high-ductility grades, featuring elongations greater than 17% and correspondingly lower strengths (with a minimum of 370 N/mm²). Strength and elongation are not the sole criteria for material selection; other critical properties include yield strength, modulus of elasticity, wear resistance, fatigue strength, hardness, and impact performance. Additionally, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and electromagnetic properties may be pivotal for designers. To meet these specialized requirements, a family of austenitic ductile irons-commonly known as Ni-Resist ductile irons-has been developed. These austenitic grades are primarily alloyed with nickel, chromium, and manganese and are included in international standards.
Pearlitic ductile iron is characterized by medium-to-high strength, moderate toughness and ductility, excellent overall performance, good wear resistance and vibration-damping capabilities, and favorable casting characteristics. Its properties can be modified through various heat treatments. It is primarily used for components such as crankshafts, camshafts, connecting shafts, connecting rods, gears, clutch plates, and hydraulic cylinder blocks in various types of power machinery.
