In our interactions with overseas clients, we have observed that the distinction between bellows-type expansion joints and rotary compensators is often a source of confusion. Take the common axial bellows compensator, for instance: while compact and space-saving, it suffers from a critical drawback-it generates significant pressure thrust (often referred to as "pressure thrust force" or "blind-end force"). If the piping network's fixed supports have not undergone rigorous structural analysis, this thrust can easily tear the supports right out of their mountings. Consequently, for long straight pipe runs or large-diameter, high-pressure networks, we typically recommend pressure-balanced compensators or thrust-free rotary compensators. These utilize ingenious internal designs to mutually cancel out thrust forces, thereby drastically reducing the load on civil engineering supports.
Beyond structural design, matching materials to operating conditions is a matter that allows for no negligence. In chemical processing or coastal projects, standard 304 stainless steel bellows are highly susceptible to stress corrosion cracking if the process medium or surrounding soil contains chloride ions. In such scenarios, we must decisively upgrade to special alloys like 316L or Inconel 625, or apply an anti-corrosive PTFE liner to the inner wall of the bellows convolutions. Furthermore, non-metallic expansion joints offer unique advantages in environments such as power plant flue gas ducts, which are characterized by low pressure, high temperatures, and highly corrosive conditions. Constructed from fiber fabrics and silicone rubber belts, they not only achieve true "zero thrust" operation but also effectively absorb the high-frequency vibrations and noise generated by fans. Metal bellows expansion joints are the most widely used category in industrial projects, typically available in three structural configurations: axial (TY), lateral (HY), and angular (JY).
Axial expansion joints are primarily used to compensate for thermal expansion and contraction in straight pipe sections; standard pressure ratings include PN10, PN16, PN25, and PN40, making them suitable for water, steam, and general process media. Lateral and angular types are better suited for accommodating pipe misalignment and directional changes, absorbing multi-dimensional displacement to prevent the buildup of rigid piping stresses. Regarding materials, 304 stainless steel is used for standard operating conditions, while 321 stainless steel is selected for high-temperature or mildly corrosive environments; 316L stainless steel is employed for highly corrosive chemical applications or coastal areas exposed to salt spray. Sleeve-type expansion joints are a well-established choice for municipal district heating networks and long-distance high-temperature hot water or steam pipelines. Mainstream models include single-acting and double-acting configurations, typically rated at PN16 or PN25. Offering a much greater compensation capacity than standard bellows expansion joints, they are ideal for large-diameter, long-distance transmission lines. Additionally, spherical expansion joints (QB type) offer distinct advantages for complex, non-linear piping networks and projects traversing rugged terrain; by utilizing the rotation of a spherical element to accommodate multi-angle angular displacement, they significantly reduce the need for pipe supports and auxiliary compensation fittings, thereby simplifying the overall network design.
